St. Francis with birds
Frederick Franck’s inspiration to make an icon of St. Francis came in 1998 in response to the news that an earthquake had destroyed several of the great artworks in Assisi.
It was cut directly from a rolled, ten-foot-high steel plate.   A veritable typhoon of birds fly above his upraised head and arms, an image that exploded in him spontaneously.  In summer and winter, this icon witnesses joyfully to the sacredness of nature.
A replica now stands in Assisi at the Guest House of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement.  Few replicas of this sculpture were made or planned, but because of appeals there is one in a nature reservation, the Brenton Arboretum, in Iowa, another one for the oldest, most important Franciscan Monastery at Megen in the heart of Holland, and one in Bremen, Germany.
This small reproduction was created in response to a request from La Verna, a Franciscan community in Amsterdam. Although we were initially skeptical we thought it beautiful and have had them made here.
